There are three main classifications of hair type based on race – Asian hair, Afro hair and Caucasian hair (or European hair).
Caucasian hair can be straight, wavy or curly. Its color can vary from blond to dark brown. This hair type grows diagonally and at a rate of about 1.2 centimeters per month.
Caucasian hair is generally straight or wavy and is the thinnest, while its cross-section is relatively elliptic. As for African hair, it is very curly, its thickness is intermediate and the shape of cross-section is highly elliptic.
So why is this? African hair produces plenty of protective oils, called sebum, which keeps our hair healthy. In fact, African hair actually produces more oils than Caucasian and Asian hair. However, due to the tight curls, the oil doesn't spread evenly along the hair fiber.
There are many similarities between a Caucasian individual's hair and an African-American person's hair. For example: all hair is composed of a cortex, a cuticle, a medulla, and the keratin protein.
Caucasian, Asian and Indian hair samples were put to the test for the World's Best Hair study. Their results put an end to any splitting of hairs over the issue: in terms of health, the Indian hair is the best, topping other ethnic groups on all four counts.
Thickest Body Hair
According to Researchers at the University of Tokyo, Japanese and Chinese people have the thickest individual hair fibers out of all people.
Hair and fur are chemically indistinguishable, having the same chemical composition, and are made of keratin. The primary difference between hair and fur is the word usage. The hair of non-human mammals refers as “fur,” while humans are said to have hair. So, basically, hair is a characteristic of all mammals.
There are people who are more genetically prone to having coarse strands. If you are of Asian or African descent, you may be more likely to have thicker hair strands.
It has been suggested that African hair grows much slower than Caucasian hair ( Br J Dermatol, pg 294-7, 2001.). African hair was measured at between 3.7 to 4.3 inches per year while Caucasian hair was measured at 5.7 to 6.3 inches per year.
Hair type 1A is super-straight. It doesn't even hold a curl! 1A is the rarest hair type. It is usually found on people of Asian descent.
Human hair comes with all sorts of colors, textures and shapes. Notably, African hair is more coiled and dry; Asian hair is straighter and thicker; and Caucasian hair is somewhere in between with around 45% having straight hair, 40% having wavy hair, and 15% having curly hair.
European hair has a fine denier and has natural light brown and blonde shades, meaning less processing. Not recommended for coarse hair textures, but can be used by hair types other than Caucasian. European hair is naturally silky and shiny and considered to be the highest quality of hair extensions you can buy.
There are three different hair texture types—fine, medium and thick. Each hair texture type has its own traits that set it apart from other hair textures and influence the care or treatment it may need.
Hair Growth Rate
Asian hair shows the fastest growth rate in comparison to the other two hair types. African hair has the lowest growth rate.
White people can have type 4 hair. While type 4 hair is most commonly seen in Black individuals, this curl pattern is not limited to one race. People of any race or ethnicity, including Caucasians, can have type 4 hair, although it's not common.
Marc Glashofer, a dermatologist and fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, claims that the texture of pubic hair tends to be thicker and more coarse than hair on the rest of our body because of its origins as a buffer. “It prevents friction during intercourse that can cause skin abrasion and rashes,” he says.
Black hair is most common in Asia and Africa. Though this characteristic can also be seen in people of Southern Europe it is less common. People of Celtic heritage in Ireland with such traits are sometimes known as the "Black Irish". Hair is naturally reflective, so black hair is not completely dark in bright light.
There are many explanations of this term's origin. I remember asking my mom when I was kid and she said back in the day most of us had kitchens located in the back of the house. Since the hair is located on the back of the neck and hair styling usually took place in the kitchen—it just stuck.
Our hair color can vary from a very light, sandy blonde to dark black. Universally ethnic women do tend to have rich-brown complexions and deep-brown hair. There are many different tonal qualities to African American hair, from medium browns and reddish mahogany to darkest blue-black.
H. Harris, publishing in the British Journal of Dermatology in 1947, wrote American Indians have the least body hair, Chinese and Black people have little body hair, white people have more body hair than Black people and Ainu have the most body hair.
The least hairy peoples are Asians and American Indians. Finally, within ethnic groups, there are familial tendencies to produce more or less hair; if your parents had a great deal of body hair, you may also, even in the absence of any abnormality.
Pubic hair plays a role in reducing friction during activities such as sexual intercourse. It also plays a role in preventing dirt and pathogens from entering the genitals. A person can safely remove their pubic hair if they wish to, but they do not need to.
Generally, muscle mass is highest in African Americans, followed by Caucasians, Hispanics, and Asians, while percent body fat is highest among Asian subjects (Wang et al., 1994; Silva et al., 2010) .
