When in doubt, go a shade or two darker to avoid looking washed out. Overly orangey or reddish undertones in your hair color can be aging and may make your color look damaged.
Going too dark with your color creates the illusion of more fine lines and wrinkles, says Michael Dueñas, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Hair Room Service. Also, if you have gray hair, you can make the line of demarcation more apparent when your hair starts to grow in.
Lighter hair color makes you look younger – but the tone you go for is paramount. Stay away from cool, ashy tones and add some warmth to your look with golden highlights. Go for shades like honey to give your complexion a healthy, youthful glow!
Your hair is making you look older if…. Nothing ages you more than hair that is too dark. In fact, as we age, hair should lighten not darken - that is why nature does it for us with those annoying gray strands. Severe dark hair can cast shadows on your face emphasizing lines and wrinkles.
Harsher black tones can bring out a lot of contrast and wash you out. Soft black can help skin look smoother and therefore more youthful.
"In 2022, everyone will be adding warmth back into the hair," predicts New York City-based colorist, Jan-Marie Lozada. She says that this take gives a twist to brunette hair and that adding warm shades like copper, auburn, and caramel will give brown hair more dimension and a richer feel.
Loose waves are more younger-looking, while straight hair can be aging. Play around with face-framing layers to give your hair some softness and movement. Layers can also make your hair appear to be more luscious and healthy. Parra recommends asking your stylist for perimeter layers that are cut in a straight line.
As a general rule, Mike Liang, advanced colorist at Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa in New York suggests going gray when you reach 80 percent non-pigmented or white hair. If your hair starts to feel increasingly dry, brittle, or damaged or you experience scalp irritation, it might be time to ditch the dye.
